When Love Feels Tired: 4 Honest Prayers for Your Marriage

Marriage is beautiful. But also… it’s a lot. It can be time-consuming, emotionally draining, and sometimes just plain exhausting—especially in a wonky or wearisome season. Some couples enter a difficult season and find themselves fighting tooth and nail to restore what once felt effortless. Sometimes, it’s not because something major has even gone wrong, but because life has worn you down and you’ve both drifted into survival mode. You love each other, but the spark feels dim. Conversations are short. Touch is infrequent. Connection feels impossible. You wonder, Is this just a rough patch? Or are we really growing apart?

If you can relate, find hope. This post is not about fixing everything.
It’s about returning to God together—even when things feel fragile and impossible.

Prayer is the key. If you’re wondering whether God cares about your marriage—He does. Scripture reminds us again and again that He is present, guiding, and restoring.

Romans 8:28
And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.
Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
John 15:5
I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.

John 15:5 is my verse for the year. And truthfully? I find it hard to abide in the Lord. To fully let go. I’m a planner—a checklist-loving, detail-obsessed, everything-must-make-sense kind of girl. I even try to “organize” my relationship with God. I hand Him the hard stuff, then quietly snatch it back when I think He’s not moving fast enough. But when I actually let go? When I stay rooted in Him, even when it feels uncertain? That’s when things shift. He moves. He heals. He restores—even if it doesn’t look the way I thought it would.

When you feel like you’re giving up, give it another shot with the best (and sometimes hardest) option. Turn to God and pray. Truly, get on your knees and pray. These prayers are short, simple, and speak to the soul of a weary marriage.

A Prayer for Softened Hearts

When life feels overwhelming, couples often slip into defense mode. Over time, resentment can build and our hearts become hardened towards our spouse. This prayer asks God to chip away at the shell around our hearts and allow space for connection to be possible.

God, we’re both carrying more than we know how to name.
Soften our hearts toward one another.
Where there’s been criticism, help us choose kindness.
Where there’s been distance, help us move closer.
Where we’ve built walls, help us start opening doors again.
Even if it’s just a crack.
We don’t need to have it all figured out—just help us take one soft step toward each other. Amen.

A Prayer for Emotional Healing & Safety

When your heart is softened and receptive but past conversations have damaged that foundation of intimacy, we can be hesitant to open up. This prayer can open the door to rebuilding that emotional intimacy and trust.

Lord, we want to feel safe with each other again.
Help us speak honestly without fear.
Help us listen without jumping to defend.
Heal the things we haven’t known how to talk about.
Give us the courage to be vulnerable—and the grace to hold each other gently in that space. Amen.

A Prayer for Shared Joy

Sometimes it feels like you’re just too busy to really enjoy one another. With the fullness of life, we can often slip into “efficiency mode” at home and there is no fun or joy in the day. Joy doesn’t always come in big moments. Sometimes it’s hidden in a shared smile or inside joke. This prayer invites God to gently lift the weight and bring warmth back into your relationship.

Father, remind us how to enjoy each other again.
Bring back laughter, ease, and lightness to our time together.
Help us remember why we chose each other in the first place.
Even in a heavy season, let joy return in small, surprising ways.
Open our eyes to the beauty we still have. Amen.

A Prayer for Endurance and Hope

Hope breathes life into weary hearts. This prayer reminds you that with God’s help, they can outlast the hard season—and come out stronger. Romans 12:12 reminds us, “Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.” Stand in the promise of breakthrough, pushing through the difficulties and remain in prayer.

God, we’re tired.
But we’re not giving up.
Help us keep choosing each other, even when it’s not easy.
Help us see this hard season as a chapter—not the whole story.
Remind us that You are with us, strengthening what feels weak and watering what feels dry.
We believe You can bring beauty here. Amen.

If your marriage feels exhausting and joyless, if you’re worn and weary, you’re not alone. You’re not broken or failing. These prayers aren’t meant to fix everything overnight. They’re meant to slow you down, quiet the noise, and bring your hearts back to the One who holds you both. Giving your marriage to God and allowing Him to work on your hearts takes time– a lot of patience, grace, and vulnerability.

Keep praying. Keep reaching. Keep hoping. He’s not done with your story yet.
